David Beckham was fined $1000 for his "conduct" last week. Whether he was egging on the fan to fight or asking him to come down to have a chat (yeah right), the MLS ruled that fans should never be encouraged to come down to the field.
When do leagues put the responsibility on the fans. They are people. Shouldn't they act like normal adults. Do people walk down the street and start screaming at each other because they don't like the way another person looks? To people yell like drunken sailors when they are at the mall? Why does the behavior become acceptable at sporting events. I am all for being passionate and in fact have always been a person that has had to make sure I don't lose control when playing sports, but we need to put responsibility on the fans to behave.
Our favorite athletes are just people like you and I that happen to have a unique talent that pays them lots of money. This doesn't make them any less angry when people start yelling obsenities at them or about their family members, just like you would get upset.
The simple solution is to begin throwing these fans out. Give security the ability to toss an unruly fan out BEFORE altercations like the one last week with Beckham and the LA Galaxy fans occur. There are specific behavioral characteristics that crazy fans demonstrate. It is simple to identify these fans. Then have a special security crew that is called to the person that gives them 1 opportunity to calm down. Then they get the boot. ONE OPPORTUNITY!
In reality there are only a handful of problem people at an event each night. Getting to these people quickly will stop them from getting others involved and upset.
Grow up people.
